Our Spin on the Sunday Reset
The Sunday Reset… or is it more of a Sunday Maintenance?? This is how we handle getting our family ready for the week!
Sundays have always felt a little different to me. There’s church, family time, hopefully a little time to slow down, and then that tiny feeling in the back of my mind that Monday is coming.
I’ve learned that I don’t need to spend my entire Sunday cleaning, meal prepping, and getting every single thing in my life perfectly organized. That’s just not realistic for us!!
Instead, I like to use Sunday as a gentle “reset.” Orrrrr maintenance, if you will. I’m not Type A enough for the typical “Sunday Reset,” so I do enough to get our home and our week feeling a little more together before Monday rolls around.
Here’s what my Sunday usually looks like.
Church
Sunday starts with church for us, and I love that it resets our posture going into whatever the week has for us. It’s encouragement for my heart and helps set our focus as a family.
I don’t always feel like I’m completely “rested” by the time Sunday is over, but I do love having that time set aside before the busyness of the week starts again.
Grocery Shopping
After church, we usually head to the grocery store.
I’m going to be honest: I am never the person who has a perfectly planned seven-day meal plan written out before walking into the grocery store.
Sometimes I have a plan. Sometimes I have a general idea of what we’re going to eat. Sometimes I plan while I’m IN the grocery store, really just trying to make sure we have enough food to get us through the week. 😂
One thing that helps me is looking at my schedule first. I like to know when I’m working and, more importantly, when my next day off is. If I know I’ll have a day off during the week, I can save some of the cooking or meal planning for then instead of trying to make everything happen on Sunday.
Throughout the week, I’ll randomly brainstorm meal ideas, and if there’s something I’m craving, I’ll plan to make it the next week.
For me, planning around our actual week works much better than trying to force myself into a perfect meal-prep routine. Because that absolutely won’t happen. 😂
Nap, Relax & Football… Maybe Laundry
After church and groceries, I like to have some downtime after lunch.
I think this part is important because a Sunday reset shouldn’t mean spending the entire day trying to be productive with tasks. Rest is part of the routine too, just as the Lord intended.
One thing about our family is we love a nap. More often than not, early to mid-afternoon, I am in my bed taking a snooze. And once football season rolls around, you can pretty much count on football being somewhere in the mix. 🏈
I try to stay on top of laundry throughout the week by doing about a load a day or every two days. I’ll fold it right then and there, however, my weakness is putting those clothes away. Unfortunately, I usually just let them sit there, clean and folded, looking at me until I decide it’s time to do the hard thing.
So by Sunday, I’m mostly just trying to get whatever laundry I left out put away. There’s something about starting the week without that pile of clothes looking at me that makes me feel like I’ve already accomplished something.
Dinner
Hopefully, one day our Sunday evenings will look like a big family dinner with my in-laws, parents, and siblings. But for now, since that isn’t a reality, we’ll just eat dinner together as a family and do the little things that help us get ready for the next day, like making Monday’s lunches. This is one of those tiny things that doesn’t take very long but makes Monday morning feel so much easier. I can guarantee you, if I don’t make my lunch the night before, I sure as heck won’t make it the morning of either. But a girl’s gotta eat, and I need to NOT spend unnecessary money, sooo making it the night before is my only option. 😂
Once that’s done, I’ll walk through the main rooms and put random things my toddler took out back where they belong. Clear the counters. Take care of anything that’s been left out throughout the day.
I love going to bed with the house feeling reasonably picked up—not because everything has to be perfect, but because I know I’ll appreciate waking up to it the next morning.
And Then… My Favorite Time: Bedtime
And then… my favorite time. It’s bedtime.
The lunches are ready. The groceries are put away. The laundry is (hopefully) done. The house is picked up enough.
And Monday can come when it comes. That’s really what my Sunday is all about.
Not perfection. Not spending the entire day cleaning. Just doing a handful of little things that make the next week feel a little less chaotic.
And sometimes the best thing we can do on Sunday is simply rest, be with the people we love, and trust that tomorrow will take care of itself.
Here’s to a new week, friends. 🤍
