The Little Things Making Our Home Feel Like Fall

There is just something about this time of year that makes me want to slow down a little. The mornings are getting cooler, football is back, and I suddenly find myself reaching for the things that make our home feel a little warmer and more inviting.

But I don’t really decorate our house for every season in a big way. I don’t want to completely change everything every few months or fill every corner with pumpkins just because it’s fall. For me, it’s the little things. A few flowers on the table. A candle burning in the kitchen. My favorite mug in the morning. Something seasonal sitting on the counter that makes me smile when I walk by. Plus, we don’t have the budget to completely redecorate every season.

Those small changes are usually enough to make our home feel like the season we’re in. So here are a few of the little things we love around our home this fall.

A Fall Arrangement on the Table

This might be my favorite one. I LOVE having flowers in our home, and I especially love an arrangement that doesn’t scream pumpkins or Halloween but still has those warm autumn colors.

This arrangement has creamy flowers mixed with mustard yellow, rust, and greenery, and I think it’s the perfect example of how I like to decorate for the season. It’s seasonal without being over the top. I actually couldn’t find one I loved, so I went to hobby lobby and bought individual pieces and put them together. It’s a fun, easy, fool proof craft.

Also because it’s sitting right in the middle of our table, I get to enjoy it every day instead of putting it somewhere that hardly gets noticed.

This is the kind of color palette I look for—soft cream, warm mustard, muted rust, and plenty of greenery.

Make sure you purchase a flower foam block so stick the flowers into! You can easily cut them to size.

A Candle That Makes the Kitchen Smell Like Fall

I’m convinced a candle can completely change the feeling of a room. Especially in the fall.  I’m not necessarily looking for the strongest pumpkin scent I can find, either. Give me something that smells warm, clean, and a little sweet and I’m happy.

I love lighting one while I’m making dinner or cleaning up the kitchen in the evening. It’s such a small thing, but it makes those everyday moments feel a little more special.

My Favorite Mug for Slow Mornings

I have always been a little partial to a good mug. I have an excellent collection, and I’m drawn to alllllllll the cute ones. There’s something about making your coffee and drinking it out of a mug you love that makes your morning feel extra special. In the fall, I tend to reach for something warm or just a little more seasonal. Nothing fancy. Just one of those little everyday things that makes me happy to see sitting beside the coffee maker.

And if you already know me, you know the coffee itself is just as important. A warm Nespresso in the morning, a little milk, and something sweet on top is pretty much my idea of a good start to the day. Here’s my FAVORITE way to make a coffee when it’s cold outside: using a milk frother.

A Throw Blanket That Actually Gets Used

I love a pretty blanket, but I love one that actually gets used even more. The kind that ends up on the couch, gets folded over the back of a chair, and eventually finds its way back onto the couch again. That’s what I want our home to feel like—pretty, but still lived in. For fall, I’m especially drawn to soft neutral throws in shades like cream, oatmeal, tan, or warm brown. They work with what we already have, so I don’t feel like I’m redecorating the entire room just because the weather changed.

A Few Little Changes in the Kitchen

The kitchen is probably the room where I notice seasonal changes the most. Maybe it’s because that’s where we spend so much of our everyday life. I’ve been enjoying adding a few warmer touches here and there—switching out a kitchen towel, bringing out a seasonal mug, keeping something pretty on the counter, and making room for a few of the things I reach for more often this time of year. Nothing that requires an entire Saturday of decorating.

Just little changes that make the kitchen feel like fall is here.

Letting the Season Show Up Naturally

I think that’s really what I love most about decorating for fall. It doesn’t have to be complicated. I don’t need to buy a whole new set of decorations or make our home look completely different. I just want a few things around us that make this particular season feel special.

Flowers on the table.

Coffee in my favorite mug.

A candle in the kitchen.

A blanket on the couch.

Football on in the background.

Dinner at home.

And all of the little ordinary moments that somehow feel a little sweeter once fall rolls around. Those are the things I’m looking forward to this year.

Here’s to a slower season, a home we love coming back to, and enjoying the little things along the way.
